An engine oil consumption measuring system (11) includes a multi-cylinder engine (12) with an exhaust system (14) positioned in a test cell (10). A sampling probe (23) has an end (24) positioned in the exhaust system (14) to receive exhaust. A sample transfer apparatus (30) includes a first end (31) fluidly connected to the sampling probe (23) and a segment (32) positioned in an interior (41) of a furnace (40). A mass spectrometer (60) includes a specimen probe (61) with an inlet (62) positioned in the segment (32) of the sample transfer apparatus (30). A particulate filter (70) is positioned in the segment (32) of the sample transfer apparatus (30) upstream from the inlet (62) of the specimen probe (61). The sample transfer apparatus (30) and the furnace (40) are maintained at temperatures above an oil condensation temperature during testing.
