<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of printing failures caused by ink non-ejection caused by a shortage of ink, and to prevent ejection failures and dropping of ink from the ejection port of a nozzle, caused by a shortage of negative pressure in a head tank. <P>SOLUTION: When it is determined that air bubbles are mixed into an ink tank, a normal liquid transfer is performed from an ink cartridge to the head tank and the head tank 135 is filled with the ink, until the liquid surface of the ink in the head tank is higher than the opening of a supply port 300, before the head tank is opened to the air. Thus, the inside of the head tank is blocked from the air.
