摘要
A flame-proofing composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of a polymer containing at least 20 per cent by weight of combined halogen and an oxide of tin, titanium, antimony, or bismuth. The polymer may be polyvinyl or polyvinylidene chloride or bromide, or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl acrylate. The composition may also include a water-soluble salt of an oxyacid of pentavalent phosphorus and one or more of urea, biuret, ammonium cyanate, and ammonium dicyanimide. Ammonium hydroxide may be added as a stabilizing agent. Further optional additions are a polyalkylene polyamine such as triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, or hexamethylene tetramine, calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, glow-retarding substances such as zinc borate or phosphate, zinc ammonium phosphate, stannic phosphate, phenyl diamido phosphate, or melamine pyrophosphate. The water-soluble phosphate may be a salt of orthophosphoric, metaphosphoric or pyrophosphoric acid, a guanidine phosphate such as monoguanidine orthophosphate being specified. The metal oxide, e.g. antimony trioxide, is dispersed in water with the aid of a dispersing agent such as a sodium or potassium salt of a condensation product of an aldehyde such as formaldehyde with a naphthalene sulphonic acid. The dispersion passed through a colloid mill to reduce the particle size to 1 micron or less, and is then mixed with a dispersion of the polymer. The ammonia-stabilized dispersions may be sold as pastes or semi-solids and diluted when required for use.
