Class 144(2) A tubeless tyre 10 has an internal removable diaphragm 22 with inextensible edges 20, 21 which seat in seats 17, 17a formed integrally with the beads 14 of the tyre, the diaphragm being otherwise normally spaced from the tyre and arranged to carry the load in the event of a tyre blow-out. As shown the diaphragm comprises a plurality of rubberized fabric plies the edges of which are folded about bead wires 20, 21 prior to curing. The beaded edge portions are rounded to seat snugly in correspondingly curved grooves 18, 19 in the radially outer surfaces of flexible rubber ledges 17, 17a moulded integrally with the beads 14 of the tyre 10, the grooves 18, 19 having a diameter not less than the edges 20, 21. A flutter valve 36 is secured to the crown of the diaphragm 22 so that during inflation, air passes through the valve 36 to the space between the diaphragm and the tyre 10, but on a blow-out of the tyre, only a seepage of air occurs through the valve, and around the diaphragm edges 20, 21, and the pressure is substantially maintained within the diaphragm. The capacity of the diaphragm is at least half the total capacity of the tyre. Fig. 8 shows an alternative arrangement of seating a diaphragm edge 30 in a rubber seat 33 moulded to a tubeless tyre bead portion 34. The tubeless tyre 10 may have an airimpervious lining 15 of Butyl rubber and a thick layer 16 of puncture sealant in the crown region of the tyre. Specification 648,998 is referred to. |
