The apparatus (10) has a spring device (40) that is provided in force path between a shift lever terminal (20) and a transmission terminal which transfers switching force to a gear box. A coupling element (44) is moved along a ramp portion (46a) during rotation of the shift lever terminal with respect to transmission terminal. The spring device is provided to exert spring force to the coupling element so as to press the coupling element on ramp portion. A sensor element is provided to detect different positions of the coupling element on the ramp portion.
