[Also in Group XIII] In steam turbine installation wherein steam for packing the glands of a turbine leaks from the turbine casing into the inner ends of the glands and after passing through the glands is discharged from the outer ends thereof the steam that leaks into the glands in excess of that required for packing them is led from the inner ends of the glands to a heat exchanger where it gives up heat to the feed water system of the installation. Live steam is supplied through a valve 31 to a gland steam reservoir 26 whence it is led to the glands 23 of an H.P. turbine 21 and an L.P. turbine 22, leakage from the glands being led to a gland vapour condenser 28 having a heater coil 29 therein through which feed water passes. A direct connection is also provided between the condenser 28 and the steam reservoir 26. via a valve 30. The valves 30, 31 are of a known electro-magnetic or motorized type or are hydraulically or pneumatically operated and are automatically controlled from a relay control box 39 connected to a temperature responsive device 36 comprising a thermostatic bulb 38 arranged in a section of the leak off line from one of the L.P. glands, the said section being provided with adjustable air inlet holes 40. When the turbines are running light steam is supplied to the glands 23 via the valve 31 and the reservoir 26, the amount of opening of the valve being automatically controlled by the amount of leak off passing the thermostatic bulb 38. At high powers steam flows from the H.P. turbine glands to the reservoir 26 and when the steam available in the reservoir is more than required for the L.P. turbine glands the valve 31 is automatically closed and the valve 30 simultaneously automatically opened to thereby allow the surplus steam to pass to the condenser 28 and heat the feed water.
