There is provided a control system for a motor vehicle comprising a central tyre inflation system (CTIS) electronic controller, the CTIS controller being configured to control the CTIS to cause inflation and deflation of one or more tyres. the CTIS controller being configured to cause the CTIS to operate in a selected one of a plurality of operating modes in each of which the system is configured to set a pressure of one or more tyres of the vehicle to a predetermined tyre pressure value, the CTIS controller being configured to receive data indicative of a type of tyre fitted to the vehicle, the controller being configured to prevent operation in a predetermined at least one of the plurality of operating modes in dependence on the data indicative of tyre type. The CTIS operating modes may include at least one on-road operating mode and at least one off-road operating mode, the tyre pressure in the off-road mode being lower than the tyre pressure in the on-road mode. The control system may be configured to extract tyre information data from image data of a sidewall of a tyre to compare against a stored tyre information data set. The tyre information data may comprise the make of tyre, size of tyre and the maximum loading of the tyre. Also disclosed is a method of controlling a central tyre inflation system of a motor vehicle and a computer program for carrying out that method on a processor. |
