A data processing system, the data processing system comprising: a data detector hardware circuit operable to apply a data detection algorithm to a detector input to yield a detected output; a data decoder hardware circuit operable to apply a data decode algorithm to a decoder input derived from the detected output to yield a decoded output, wherein application of the data detection algorithm and at least one application of the data decode algorithm is a global iteration; a memory circuit operable to maintain a first data set and a second data set, wherein the first data set exhibits a first quality and a first number of global iterations, and wherein the second data set exhibits a second quality and a second number of global iterations; and a scheduling hardware circuit operable to select one of the first data set and the second data set as the detector input for processing by the data detector hardware circuit, wherein the selection is based at least in part upon a comparison of the first number of global iterations and the second number of global iterations.
