Embodiments of the present disclosure provide for methods of converting glycerol to formic acid and the like.

providing glycerol, a catalyst, and O2; and converting glycerol to formic acid in the presence of a catalyst and O2 at a temperature of about 455 K or less, wherein the catalyst is a vanadium-substituted phosphomolybic acid.
