Squarylium dyes

Squarylium dyes with improved design flexibility via functionalization thereof thereby yielding desirable photophysical, solubility, thermal stability, and/or light stability properties, for example. The resulting dyes are useful in optical filters and as fluorescent indicators, for example.

A squarylium dye having the formula (III) wherein each R group is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, and alkylether, wherein at least three R groups are not hydrogen; each R′ group is independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkylsulfonate, arylsulfonate, alkylcarboxylate, and arylcarboxylate; each R″ group is independently selected from the group consisting of amine, sulfonamide, carbamate, amide, urea, and hydroxyl, wherein when each R′ group is alkyl, both R″ groups cannot be an amide; and mixtures thereof.
