Use of oritavancin for prevention and treatment of anthrax

Glycopeptide antibiotics, such as oritavancin, demonstrate significant activity against B. anthracis. Methods for the treatment, prophylaxis and prevention of B. anthracis infection and disease in animals, including humans, are described.

A method of preventing a B. anthracis infection in a subject, consisting of administering to a subject at risk of exposure to B. anthracis one or more antibiotics in an amount sufficient to prevent B. anthracis infection, wherein the one or more antibiotics includes oritavancin, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, or hydrate thereof, or a mixture thereof, thereby preventing a B. anthracis infection in a subject.
