The present invention relates to an automated teller machine capable of detecting counterfeit currency and a method for detecting counterfeit currency using the automated teller machine. The automated teller machine comprises: a bill deposit and withdrawal unit which receives one or more bills to be deposited and discharges one or more bills to be withdrawn; a bill accommodating unit which accommodates the deposited bills; a transfer unit which transfers the bills input through the bill deposit and withdrawal unit to the bill accommodating unit and transfers the bills to be withdrawn to the bill deposit and withdrawal unit; a light emitting unit which irradiates the input bills with infrared light by using an LED which emits infrared rays; a light receiving unit for detecting light emitted from an anti-Stokes material formed on the bills by the irradiated infrared light; and a bill determining unit which determines counterfeiting of the bills by using the detected light, wherein the transfer unit transfers the non-counterfeited bills as a determination result of the bill determining unit to the accommodation unit, and transfers the counterfeited bills to the bill deposit and withdrawal unit to be discharged. |
