Provided is an antimalarial drug which is useful for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases caused by malaria parasites. A preventive and/or therapeutic agent for malaria, which contains, as an active ingredient, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), a derivative thereof, or a pharmacologically acceptable salt thereof, is used.

1. A method for treating or preventing malaria in a subject without performing light irradiation comprising the steps of:
identifying a subject suspected of having malaria; and administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound represented by the following formula (I) or a pharmacologically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group, and R2 represents a hydrogen atom, a linear or branched alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aralkyl group, or an aryl group; in combination with one or more kinds of metal-containing compounds, wherein the metal portion of the metal-containing compound is iron, magnesium, or zinc.
