An image capturing apparatus comprising: an image capturing device for capturing a subject image that has passed through an image capturing optical system having a focal point optical system; a memory; and a control unit, including a processor, in communication with the memory, the control unit configured to control: a brightness signal processing unit for generating a brightness signal obtained by performing signal intensity correction processing using a signal intensity amplification factor on an output signal of each color component which is output from the image capturing device; a focal evaluation value calculation processing unit for calculating a focal evaluation value by extracting a particular frequency component from the brightness signal; a signal intensity detection unit for calculating a signal intensity evaluation value of each color component in an area on the image capturing device where a brightness signal is generated, the area corresponding to a focus detection area; wherein, when a signal intensity of the output signal is greater than or equal to a predetermined value, the control unit changes the signal intensity amplification factor of each color component in accordance with the signal intensity evaluation value of the color component, and when the signal intensity of the output signal is less than the predetermined value, the control unit sets at least a signal intensity amplification factor of a color component, of which signal intensity evaluation value of the color component is the least, at a value different from the signal intensity amplification factor of the color component.
