PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a catheter or sheath having a large diameter to be inserted percutaneously or surgically through an iliac artery, a femoral artery or a subclavian artery and then to be removed without damaging a patient or developing a complication.SOLUTION: A sheath is configured for use in a vascular system and has utility in insertion and removal of implant delivery catheters. An access route is through femoral arteries and iliac arteries into an aorta. A distal end of the sheath is maintained in a first collapsed cross-sectional shape during advancement to arteries in the aorta. The distal end of the sheath is then expanded using a radial dilatation device, which is removed prior to the insertion of the implant delivery catheters. The distal end of the sheath is subsequently reduced to a diametrically small size for removal. |
