PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems with a supercharge controller of a conventional internal combustion engine that has a sufficient valve overlap period for which an intake valve of an engine and an exhaust valve thereof are simultaneously open, that residual gas remaining in cylinders increases if an exhaust pressure is higher than an actual boost pressure, so that engine output, that is, engine torque gently increases since the quantity of intake air increases gently despite a rapid increase in actual boost pressure in response to a rapid increase in exhaust pressure due to a reduction in a turbine capacity at acceleration initial time.SOLUTION: During acceleration, an engine control system executes a first control first. If an actual boost pressure increases up to a predetermined boost pressure, the engine control system then executes a second control, thereby optimizing a turbine capacity and a valve overlap period corresponding to an operating state of an engine during acceleration. As a result, during the overlap period, an intake valve and an exhaust valve of the engine can be made simultaneously open in conditions that a scavenging effect is greater than the influence of exhaust interference. |
