The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method to control a speed of a high pressure pump capable of supplying a liquefied natural gas to an engine. The apparatus to control the speed of a high pressure pump of a ship comprises: a hydraulic motor to control the speed of the high pressure pump, and to drive the high pressure pump; a hydraulic power unit including a storage to store oil and a fixated displacement type hydraulic pump, and to control the speed of the hydraulic motor by controlling a flow rate of the oil supplied to the hydraulic motor; and a recirculation valve to allow some of the oil transferred by the fixated displacement type hydraulic pump from the storage to flow again to the storage.
