There are cases when optical devices are controlled by cyclically altering the voltage applied to a liquid crystal or the like. However, if the voltage cycle and the blinking cycle of an external light such as from a signal are similar, flickering arises. This optical device is provided with: a transmittance altering unit that alters the transmittance of light from outside by means of an applied voltage and that is provided to the front of a user eye; and a voltage control unit that performs control that cyclically switches the voltage applied to the transmittance altering unit between a high voltage and a low voltage. The voltage control unit switches the voltage at a cycle shorter than the sum of: the time required for stabilization when the voltage is switched from the state of the transmittance of the transmittance altering unit being the lowest value, changing to the highest value; and the time required for stabilization when the voltage is switched from the state of the transmittance of the transmittance altering unit being the highest value, changing to the lowest value. |
