Disclosed is a method for applying a seal (2) to a workpiece (3), in particular to a vehicle body component. In said method, an application head (4) continuously guides the seal (2) to the workpiece (3) and presses the seal (2) against the workpiece while the application head (4) and the workpiece (2) are moved relative to one another. Furthermore, as the seal (2) is guided to the workpiece (3), the same is directed in a free loop (10) that acts as a seal buffer.
