A video decoding method involving intra prediction includes: parsing a most probable mode (MPM) flag of a block while parsing symbols of the block of an encoded video from a received bitstream; determining whether a predetermined number of a plurality of candidate intra prediction modes are used to predict an intra prediction mode of the block based on the MPM flag; when it is determined that the plurality of candidate intra prediction modes are used based on the MPM flag, determining the plurality of candidate intra prediction modes based on intra prediction modes of a left block and an upper block that are adjacent to the block while restoring the intra prediction mode of the block by using the parsed symbols.

1. A method of decoding video data, the method comprising:
when an intra prediction mode of a left block is equal to an intra prediction mode of an upper block and the intra prediction mode of the left block is one of predetermined intra prediction modes including a planar mode and a DC mode, determining candidate intra prediction modes including the planar mode, the DC mode and a vertical mode; when the intra prediction mode of the left block is equal to the intra prediction mode of the upper block and the intra prediction mode of the left block is not equal to one of the predetermined intra prediction modes, determining the candidate intra prediction modes including an intra prediction mode corresponding to an index that is less than an index of the left intra prediction mode by a predetermined number and an intra prediction mode corresponding to an index that is greater than the index of the left intra prediction mode by the predetermined number; when the intra prediction mode of the left block is not equal to the intra prediction mode of the upper block, determining the candidate intra prediction modes including the intra prediction mode of the left block, the intra prediction mode of the upper block and one of the planar mode, the DC mode and the vertical mode; parsing, from a bitstream, a mode index indicating one among the candidate intra prediction modes; determining an intra prediction mode of the current block by using the mode index; and performing intra prediction on the current block using the intra prediction mode of the current block.
