An information recording and playback device according to the present disclosure is provided with: a playback unit which generates a digital signal from an analog signal which has been recorded on an information recording medium; a recording compensation unit which generates an expected value signal from the digital signal, detects the difference between the digital signal and the expected value signal, and adjusts recording conditions for recording information on the information recording medium; and a recording unit which records information on the basis of the recording conditions. The information recording and playback device performs first recording compensation which adjusts the recording conditions using first recording data of a length in which the lengths of spaces before and after first recording marks, and the lengths of spaces before and after second recording marks, do not result in intersymbol interference; places the second recording marks, on which the first recording compensation has been performed, either before or after the first recording marks on which the first recording compensation has been performed; keeps the lengths of spaces that are sandwiched between the first recording marks and the second recording marks constant; and using second recording data which changes the lengths of the second recording marks, performs second recording compensation which adjusts of the recording conditions for the first recording marks.
