An apparatus for performing a simulation of a subsurface hydrocarbon reservoir, comprising: a) a database configured to store data comprising equations that represent the thermodynamic calculations associated with black-oil, compositional and thermal flow scenarios, and field measurements of said subsurface hydrocarbon reservoir being simulated; b) a plurality of data processors, including at least one central processing unit and at least one graphical processing unit, configured to receive the stored data from the database and to execute software components; c) an integrated set of software components, capable of massive parallel computations of said stored data, executable on said plurality of data processors; d) a software program executable by said plurality of data processors, the software program containing a computer readable software instruction, comprising: i) a set of heuristic rules configured to apply a best guess estimation to the stored data to determine the appropriation hardware and software configuration to efficiently simulate said hydrocarbon reservoir; andii) an adaptive strategy to choose successive hardware configurations as the simulation progresses; e) a memory for storing the results obtained by execution of said software components by said plurality of data processors on said stored data; and f) an output display for displaying results obtained by execution of software components by said plurality of data processors on said stored data.
