The invention relates to a fuel cell system comprising at least one fuel cell stack that is integrated in a housing, in or on which housing there is provided, in a region located higher than the components that carry hydrogen for normal operation of the fuel cell system are arranged, a hydrogen sensor which cooperates with an outflow opening for free hydrogen located in the interior of the housing, said housing being substantially closed at least at the top in the operating state of the fuel cell system. Also provided is a control system which, in order to check the functioning of the hydrogen sensor, emits at intervals into the housing or directly onto a measuring region of the hydrogen sensor a certain amount of hydrogen via a suitably positioned exit opening such that said hydrogen sensor can detect the emitted hydrogen within a predefined duration and the control system recognizes such a detection of hydrogen by the hydrogen sensor as evidence that the hydrogen sensor is functioning. |
