PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions comprising high oxidation state metal compounds, in particular silver(III) compounds, for the treatment or prophylaxis of microbial, including bacterial, infections, and medical devices incorporating these compounds or compositions, where such compositions are stable at room temperature and pressure and compatible with medical device substrate materials, such as polyurethanes, containing no biologically unacceptable moieties, notwithstanding their strongly oxidizing properties.SOLUTION: A compound comprises a metal species and a biologically acceptable ligand. The biologically acceptable ligand comprises a biguanide moiety, and forms a complex with the metal species, where the metal species is stabilized in an oxidation state greater than 1+. Also provided are compositions and medical devices comprising the compound. Further provided is a method for the treatment or prophylaxis of microbial, including bacterial, infections, comprising the use of such compounds, compositions or medical devices. |
