A control unit of an industrial vehicle executes an automatic downshift for downshifting the speed range of a transmission to a speed range lower than the current speed range. The control unit makes the determination to execute the automatic downshift on the basis of automatic downshift conditions. The automatic downshift conditions include the manipulated variable of an accelerator-manipulating member being equal to or greater than a prescribed accelerator threshold value, the vehicle speed being less than a prescribed speed threshold value, and the acceleration being equal to or less than a prescribed acceleration threshold value.
