PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuous process for manufacturing high molecular weight polymers in high quality from cyclic ester monomers in an economically attractive manner on an industrial scale.SOLUTION: A continuous process for the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic ester monomers to form aliphatic polyesters at temperature of 100-240°C includes a) continuously providing cyclic ester monomer and polymerization catalyst to a continuous mixing reactor, the reactor being operated at conditions effective for polymerization to form a pre-polymerized reaction mixture, b) continuously removing pre-polymerized reaction mixture from the continuous mixing reactor and continuously providing pre-polymerized reaction mixture to a plug flow reactor, the plug flow reactor being operated under polymerization conditions in which the reaction mixture is polymerized to a degree of polymerization of at least 90% to form a polymer, and c) continuously removing the polymer from the plug flow reactor. |
