Disclosed is a method for automatically updating candidate surveillance areas by image recording device or server using smart-rotation surveillance technology. According to an preferable embodiment of the present invention, Images received from m candidate surveillance areas are analyzed and if there is no additional event in at least one out of m candidate surveillance areas, the number of candidate surveillance areas is updated to n by excluding those areas with no additional events, so that the number of areas requiring surveillance is reduced and the duration of surveillance time is increased for those areas requiring surveillance.
