Class 123(1) [Also, in Groups XXV, XXVIII and XXXVI] A metal cable, pipe &c 1 is protected against electrolytic corrosion by a thin metal wire or ribbon 2 which forms a sacrificial anode and extends over substantially the whole length of the cable, the ribbon 2, which may be of magnesium for a lead-sheathed cable or aluminium containing about 4 per cent zinc for an aluminium-sheathed cable, being wound around the cable 1 in open helical form and held in contact therewith at intermittently-spaced points by a helicallyapplied non-metallic tape 3 having the opposite direction of lay to the ribbon 2. A further non-metallic tape 4 may be applied beneath the ribbon 2, preferably having the opposite direction of lay to the ribbon 2 and consisting of a cellulosic material impregnated with an inhibitor such as barium chromate. An overall waterproof covering may be applied. |
