<p>A composition for use in the dyeing or tinting of hair comprises a mixture of a compound of the general formula <FORM:0710134/IV(c)/1> wherein X is hydrogen or a halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxyalkyl group, free from sulphonic and carboxylic groups, and a reducing agent selected from sulphites, bisulphites, and mercaptans of the general formula SH-R-Y wherein R is a bivalent aliphatic residue and Y is H or a carboxyl group. The composition may also contain thickeners and dispersing agents. The hair is dyed by aplying the above composition simultaneously with ammonia or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic base or a basic salt thereof of basic reaction, or by mixing the composition with the base immediately before application to the hair. Examples are given in which the following compositions are prepared: (1) 2, 4, 5-trihydroxytoluene, thioglycollic acid, glycol stearate, sulphonated lauryl alcohol and ammonia, (2) 2, 4, 5-trihydroxytoluene thioglycerol, glycerol stearate and sulphonated lauryl alcohol, and monoethanolamine, (3) 2, 4, 5-trihydroxytoluene, thioglycollic acid, glycol stearate, sulphonated lauryl alcohol and triammonium phosphate, (4) 2, 4, 5-trihydroxytoluene thioglycerol, glycerol stearate, sulphonated lauryl alcohol and triethanolamine, (5) 2, 4, 5-trihydroxytoluene thiolactic acid, glycol stearate, sulphonate lauryl alcohol and morpholine, (6) 1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene, sodium bisulphite, lanette wax, glycol monostearate and ammonia, and (7) 2, 4, 5-trihydroxybromobenzene, sodium bisulphite, lanette wax, glycol monostearate and triammonium phosphate.
