548,377. Conveyers. MULLER & CIE. MASCHINENFABRIK UND EISENGIESSEREI AKT.-GES., A. Sept. 3,1940, No. 13802. Convention date, April 11. [Class 78 (i)] Conveying and pressing apparatus for feeding wood working machines, for example, in the making of plywood, as described in Specification 547,792, in which upper and lower co-operating sets of parallel bars are reciprocated in timed relation so as to grip the articles on the forward strokes only, are provided with driving mechanism which imparts to each set a rapid forward motion at the beginning of each stroke followed by slower motion. During the forward stroke the trailing edges may be gripped before the leading edges. In the example shown, plywood veneers are fed in between two sets of bars, one set consisting of upper and lower co-operating bars 1, 2 and the other set of bars 3, 4. The bars 1 and 2 are reciprocated longitudinally by an assembly including frames 13, 14 and carriages 5 provided with rollers 8, running on rails 9, 10 in the main frame. The lower bars 2 are rigid with the lower frame 14 which is slidable vertically on columns 12 forming part of the frames 5 and 6 supported by rollers 19 on the main frame. The upper bars 2 are connected by springs 15, which cushion the clamping of the plywood, to the upper frame 13 which is forced upwardly by springs 21 against rollers 24 carried by the fixed upper frame 23. Vertical screw adjustment of this upper frame 23 adapts the machine to take work of any thickness. During the forward stroke the upper frame 13 and bars 1 are lowered, so as to clamp the work, by engagement of plates 54, having chamfered ends, with rollers 57 mounted on pivoted levers which abut against stops 60. During the return stroke the rollers swing clear and the frame 13 and bars 1 remain clear of the work. The other frame including upper and lower bars 3, 4 is similarly mounted and operated alternatively with the bars 1, 2. The two systems are reciprocated by two pairs of cams mounted on a transverse shaft 35, the cams engaging rollers 41, 49 on levers 43, 51 connected by links 42, 50 to the frames. In a modification, the cam operating mechanism, including shafts 35, is duplicated and the rollers 57 on swinging links are replaced by eccentrically mounted rollers oscillated by connections to the cam mechanism. |
