714,055. Coking and gasifying carbonaceous material. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 24, 1951 [April 24, 1950; Dec. 4, 1950], Nos. 10008/50 and 29600/50. Class 55 (1). [Also in Group XIII] In processes for carbonizing or gasifying fluidized particulate carbonaceous material, gases or vapours used are preheated by upward passage through a vessel down which heated pebbles as of alumina or mullite descend under gravity, the pebbles having themselves been heated in another vessel by contact with ascending hot gases obtained from the process. In one embodiment pebbles which have been heated by gases from the carbonization or gasification step pass to a preheater for air &c. for a combustion step, tar &c. which may have been deposited being burnt off in the second vessel. In an example pebbles consisting of mullite balls of A inch diameter are heated by combustion products at 1050‹ C. and pass through a 3 inch bore pipe to an air heating vessel in which the air for combustion is heated thereby to 900‹ C. The hot coke from the combustion vessel is transferred to a gasproducing stage with recovery of 88 per cent of the heat liberated in the combustion stage. Specification 638,511 is referred to.
|
