An ion mobility spectrometer or separator comprises multiple groups of electrodes, each group comprising a first electrode connected to a first independently controllable voltage supply, a second electrode connected to a second independently controllable voltage supply, and one or more intermediate electrodes. The first electrode, the intermediate electrodes and the second electrode are interconnected by a series of resistors to form a resistive divider. Some of the independently controllable voltage supplies are arranged to supply voltages to at least two adjacent groups of electrodes to continuously subject an ion distribution to a non-zero voltage gradient or electric field as the ion distribution progress along a drift region. Other independently controllable voltage supplies are arranged to supply voltages to other groups of electrodes to apply a different voltage gradient or electric field across portions of the drift region which are distal from the ion distribution. |
