摘要 <p>An infrared (IR)detector 28 on a missile is provided with a cryogenic cooling system 10 in which a first cryogenic material 44 located within an on-board container 36 is cooled to the solid state prior to launch by a remotely located second cryogen 56 conduited to the container. Immediately prior to becoming airborne, connection is broken to the second cryogen and on-board cooling is achieved by venting the container to space environment causing sublimation of the solid first cryo­genic material, or, alternatively, the container 36 may be left sealed and cooling results from triple-point transition of the solid cryogen. The second cryogen may cool the container directly via a heat exchange coil, or may pass through a Joule-Thomson cryostat 52 to spray cold liquid onto the container.</p>
