An infrared (IR)detector 28 on a missile is provided with a cryogenic cooling system 10 in which a first cryogenic material 44 located within an on-board container 36 is cooled to the solid state prior to launch by a remotely located second cryogen 56 conduited to the container. Immediately prior to becoming airborne, connection is broken to the second cryogen and on-board cooling is achieved by venting the container to space environment causing sublimation of the solid first cryoÂgenic material, or, alternatively, the container 36 may be left sealed and cooling results from triple-point transition of the solid cryogen. The second cryogen may cool the container directly via a heat exchange coil, or may pass through a Joule-Thomson cryostat 52 to spray cold liquid onto the container.
|
