1. A process for producing terephthalic acid comprising:
a first step of contacting p-xylene, a first solvent comprising a carboxylic acid, a first bromine source, a first catalyst, and a first oxidizing agent in a first reaction zone to produce a p-xylene stream enriched with p-toluic acid; followed by a second step in which the p-xylene stream enriched with p-toluic acid is contacted with a second solvent comprising an ionic liquid, a second bromine source, a second catalyst, and a second oxidizing agent in a second reaction zone to produce a product comprising terephthalic acid, wherein the first reaction zone and the second reaction zone are in different reactors. |
