A process for the production of steel alloys comprises adding to a steel melt material such as manganese, chromium, tungsten and/or their ferrous alloys and/or suitably alloyed scrap. blowing oxygen into the melt, reducing the steel and the refining or final slag by suitable reducing agents and completing deoxidation of the steel and slag by addition of aluminium in such quantity that no substantial excess of aluminium is present over that quantity necessary for deoxidation. Before addition of alloying materials unwanted quantities of elements such as carbon or phosphorus are removed by a preliminary refining, e.g. by blowing in oxygen, and the slag is removed. Refining slag without reducing agents may be added before the main oxygen blowing treatment and, where the melt was made in an electric furnace the oxygen blowing may take place in a different vessel such as a ladle or converter. The production of an alloy steel having the analysis C 0.59 per cent., Si 0.27 per cent., Mn 17.2 per cent., P 0.4 per cent., S 0.005 per cent., Cr 38 per cent., and Ni 0.1 per cent. is referred to.
|
