718,494. Speedometers; recording-apparatus. AEBERHARD, R. Feb. 29, 1952, No. 10103/50. Classes 106 (3) and 106 (4) In a speedometer for a motor vehicle, having indicating elements arranged around the periphery of a rotatable drum, which elements are displaced axially of the drum in accordance with changes in vehicle speed and retained in the displaced position. while they are moved by the drum across a scale. or the like, the elements are retained by means. of a magnetic. field the effective influence of which terminates beyond the scale &c. to free the elements for further axial displacement. As shown, a shaft 1 driven from the vehicle carries a centrifugal-type pivoted weight 2 which operates through link-work a lever 4, the forked end of which. engages a pin 4a on a frame 9 to move the latter up and down axially of the drum 12 which is driven from the shaft 1 through gearing 13. The elements comprise rods 11 carried between the teeth of annular parts 12a, 12b, on the drum and guided by rings 15, 16. As the rods are rotated by the drum, they are raised by a fixed helical segment 10b and are then dropped on to the base 9a of the frame 9 which positions them in accordance with vehicle speed. When they leave the other end of the frame the rods are drawn between the teeth of the drum by a retaining magnet M while they pass across a window F covered by a scale S (the inner guide ring 15 being interrupted here), so that their upper tips provide a graph-type indication of the variations in speed. When the rods leave the window they drop on to the segment 10b and recommence their cycle. |
