The present invention describes a method for activating sub-bituminous coal by electrocoagulation. The activation method consists in a thermal and chemical treatment under not severe conditions (low temperature and low concentration of reactants), by means of electrocoagulation and alkaline and oxidizing solutions at low concentrations. This method is useful for improving the adsorbent capacity of sub-bituminous coal, so that it can be used for removing metallic and non-metallic ions in the treatment of liquid and gaseous effluents, mainly.
