A spread fiber material (spread tow (11)) is manufactured by steps that include: spreading a crimped tow (10) in the widthwise direction by means of a preliminary fiber spreading device (2); performing primary fiber spreading of the tow (10) by means of a primary fiber spreading device (3); dividing and separating the tow (10) into at least two divided tows (10A, 10B) by means of a dividing device (4); cutting the divided tows (10A, 10B) at a dividing point (P) by means of a cutting device (5); and performing secondary fiber spreading of the divided tows (10A, 10B) by means of a secondary fiber spreading device (6).
