The purpose of the present invention is to provide a device for detecting tool breakage in a machine tool wherein the device makes it possible to efficiently detect tool breakage while also limiting increases in maintenance. A device for detecting tool breakage in a machine tool, which is equipped with a main shaft (14), a tool magazine (16) capable of holding multiple tools (15), and an automatic tool-exchanging device (17) for automatically exchanging tools (15) between the main shaft (14) and the tool magazine (16), is provided with an image recognition unit comprising: an imaging means (19a) for imaging a pre-processing tool (15) that is conveyed from the tool magazine (16) to the main shaft (14) by the automatic tool-exchanging device (17) and the post-processing tool (15) conveyed from the main shaft (14) to the tool magazine (16) by the automatic tool-exchanging device (17); and an image-processing means (19b) for detecting tool breakage by comparing the images of the pre-processing tool (15) and the post-processing tool (15) taken by the imaging means (19a).
