A height detection unit that: captures images while relatively moving an uneven section and an objective lens in the vertical direction; and detects the height of the uneven section on the basis of a focal position found for each of a plurality of pixels comprising the captured image. The height detection unit executes: a first stage processing whereby a position of a positioning device at which the brightness the captured image is greatest is used as a focal point candidate position, for each of the plurality of pixels configuring the captured image and within an imaging cycle for an imaging device; and a second stage processing whereby, after the imaging device has captured all images, a focal position is found for each of the plurality of pixels comprising the images captured before and after the focal point candidate position found by the first stage processing, on the basis of a contrast value found on the basis of the plurality of brightness levels for the images captured before and after, and the height of the uneven section is detected on the basis of said focal position.
