A method comprising: transmitting a first electromagnetic signal toward a target object; receiving an echo of the first electromagnetic signal off of the target object; determining a time of flight of one or more of the first electromagnetic signal or the echo of the first electromagnetic signal by comparing a transmit sequence of digital bits representative of the first electromagnetic signal with a receive sequence of digital bits representative of the echo of the first electromagnetic signal; transmitting a second electromagnetic signal toward the target object; receiving an echo of the second electromagnetic signal off of the target object; determining a temporal misalignment between one or more waveforms representative of the echo of the second electromagnetic signal and one or more waveforms representative of the second electromagnetic signal that are time delayed from transmission of the second electromagnetic signal by the time of flight; and determining a distance to the target object based on a combination of the temporal misalignment and the time of flight.
