A metal complex which is represented by formula (1). (In the formula, M represents an iridium atom or a platinum atom; n1 represents 1, 2 or 3; n2 represents 0, 1 or 2; each of E1-E4 represents a nitrogen atom or a carbon atom; each of R1-R10 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an alkoxy group, a cycloalkoxy group, an aryl group, an aryloxy group, a monovalent heterocyclic group or a halogen atom, and at least one moiety selected from the group consisting of the R1-R4 moieties is a group represented by formula (D-A) or (D-B); each of Xa and Xb represents a direct bond, an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, -C(=O)-, -CRXa 2- or -NRXa-, and RXa represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group or a monovalent heterocyclic group, provided that Xa and/or Xb is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, -C(=O)-, -CRXa 2- or -NRXa-; and A1-G1-A2 represents an anionic bidentate ligand, wherein G1 represents an atomic group that constitutes the bidentate ligand together with A1 and A2, and each of A1 and A2 represents a carbon atom, an oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom.)
