[Also in Group XV] A highly volatile solvent is used to activate the dry adhesive of a window patch for its application to an envelope so that contact can be made over the whole area of overlap and any excess adhesive activated will dry before the envelopes are stacked. Solvent. fed from a bottle 10 by a conduit 13 keeps a reservoir 15 at a constant level. A shoe 29 covered with absorbent material cut out to correspond with the area to be activated is rotated past first a moistening'roller 16 and then a squeeze roller 24, both of which are also rotated, and then into contact with a patch held on a suction applicator 32 which is resiliently mounted on a shaft 33 rotated by an arm 34 on a drive shaft 35. A patch is cut by a knife 48, picked up by the applicator 32, moistened by the shoe 29 and immediately applied to a window blank 9 carried by conveyer belts, 54, 55 over a pressure roller 53. A sensing member 60 is provided which controls a micro-switch 61 and if no blank is present by electrical connections moves a roll 70 on an arm 69 to prevent contact between the shoe 29 and applicator 32 so that a patch on the latter is not moistened and can be removed by scraping mechanism from the pressure roller 53. An alternative method is to have the dry adhesive around the envelope window frame. |
