A process for producing hydrogen by reducing steam with reduced iron oxide in which the oxide is maintained as a fluidized bed in both the hydrogen-producing and iron oxide-reducing zones, is combined with a gas generation stage in which particulate coal &c. is fluidized by air or oxygen and steam or carbon dioxide, and the gases generated are used to reduce the iron oxide after which the material is degasified by nitrogen &c. to remove absorbed contaminants before returning to the hydrogen-producing zone. Iron oxide is maintained as a fluidized bed at about 500-800 DEG C. in a vessel 129 by gases from a producer 2 to which a little air may be added preferably in the upper of several stages, to supply the heat required. The reduced powder overflows through a pipe 136 into a degasifying chamber 138 which it descends in counterflow to an inert gas, preferably nitrogen, from a duct 141 reheated in an exchanger 149 by indirect contact with the effluent from the chamber. The described material is taken up to a separator 144 and supply chamber 145 by inert gas supplied to a distribution box 170 the hot gas returning to the blower <PICT:0723332/III/1> 142. The material is fluidized in a water-jacketed vessel 157 by superheated steam from a pipe 160, hydrogen and steam passing through a solids separator 162 and heat exchanger 165 to a water-condenser.
