A device includes coupling means to connect to a human or animal body to provide body coupled communication (BCC), e.g. by means of capacitive coupling. The device includes a transmitter which, from time to time, transmits a signal of at least a predetermined temporal duration. The device also includes a data receiver which wakes up at listening instances to detect whether a signal is present. The time interval between listening instances is less than or equal to the predetermined duration. The listening instances may occur periodically. The device initiates a processing operation (such as reading data) in response to the detection of the presence of a signal on the communications path. The transmitted signal is described as a data signal and may include information identifying the transmitting device. The invention may be used to discover another device. It preferably operates in half-duplex mode. |
