<p>A system includes a vertical shaft or housing 108 at least partially submerged in water. A valve 104 allow a regulated amount of water to enter and fall into the housing 108 to drive a water wheel or turbine 106 which drives a generator or mechanical device. Water collects 114 in a reservoir 120 and is driven by pump 506 to drive the water wheel or turbine 106 via a jet. The water may pass through a spiral tubular structure 129, 602 which is said to accelerate and organise the water flow. There may be two or more turbines in parallel or series.
