The present invention relates to a subject tracking method and apparatus. The apparatus of the present invention comprises: a subject detection unit for detecting a region containing a subject from an image input; a subject tracking unit for detecting a plurality of feature points from a region corresponding to the subject for each frame of an image input and tracking a position of the subject by comparing feature points detected from a current frame and a previous frame; and an overlap determination unit for determining an overlapping state of the subject by using an estimated state variable calculated based on one of an average value of feature points and a maximum resemblance value where in information of the subject is updated only if the subject is not in an overlapping state.
