A composition comprising a base fluid, a siloxane, silica, microspheres, and a catalyst. When cured, it is preferably used as a pipeline pig. The base fluid may be a silicone-based oil, such as a straight-chained polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a viscosity of 50-150 cSt, a polyolefin-based oil, preferably polyalphaolefin, or a combination thereof. The siloxane may be a polydimethylsiloxane, preferably a vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane with a viscosity of 5000-10000 cSt, and/or a polysiloxane, preferably a methyl hydrogen polysiloxane. The silica may be amorphous fumed silica with a particle size of 5-50 nm and the microspheres are preferably glass microspheres with a diameter ranging from 20 to 200 μm. The catalyst may be an organoplatinum compound, such as Karstedts platinum catalyst. The composition preferably has the following properties: tensile strength 0.08-0.12 MPa, Youngs modulus 0.05-0.15 MPa and tear strength 0.08-0.12 kN/m. A method of preparing a composition by mixing a polyolefin-based oil with a silicone-based oil and adding to their mixture a polydimethylsiloxane, silica, microspheres, a polysiloxane and a catalyst, preferably in this order, is also claimed. By further adding a magnet, a transmitter and/or a detector, the composition may serve as a smart or intelligent pig. |
