<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system that implements a reduced processing load. <P>SOLUTION: A system 100 configures a plurality of VLANs via a first communication device 110 and a second communication device 120. The first communication device acquires frame number information indicating the number of frames transmitted on a VLAN. The second communication device acquires frame number information indicating the number of frames received on a VLAN. Either communication device establishes a communication session to the other communication device on one (representative VLAN) of the plurality of VLANs, and transmits via the communication session a maintenance frame containing flow identification information identifying a VLAN and the frame number information acquired about the VLAN.
