摘要 The present invention enables a pattern identifying apparatus that calculates a feature amount and identifies a predetermined pattern, such as a face, based on the calculated feature amount to perform processing for reading a large volume of data at a high speed. To achieve this, a coprime relationship is established between an interval between adjoining processing windows arranged in an image and the number of memories in which the image is interleaved and stored, thereby always establishing an exclusive relationship between the memories from which data at the same position relative to reference points in the respective processing windows is read. It is thus possible to read data simultaneously, resulting in achievement of speedup.

A pattern identifying apparatus in which a plurality of processing target regions are arranged in a reticular pattern at a predetermined interval S1, S2, . . . , SN in each dimensional direction of input data in N dimensions, and that identifies a predetermined pattern from each processing target region, the apparatus comprising: an input device that inputs data in the N dimensions; a processor; a plurality of memories whose number is a product of numbers that are assigned to respective dimensions to hold input data obtained by the input device; a memory access controller that writes the input data in the plurality of memories in accordance with a predetermined rule and reads, in parallel, data at the same position in each of the processing target regions relative to a reference point, which is provided in each of the processing target region; wherein a feature amount is calculated using a plurality of sets of data that are read in parallel by the memory access controller; and wherein a predetermined pattern is identified using the feature amount calculated, wherein at least one pair of the interval determined for each dimensional direction and a corresponding number of the memories is in a coprime relationship.
